
What is VRF/VRV?
Variable refrigerant flow (VRF), Variable refrigerant volume (VRV) is an air-condition system configuration where there is one outdoor condensing unit and multiple indoor units. The term variable refrigerant flow refers to the ability of the system to control the amount of refrigerant flowing to the multiple evaporators (indoor units), enabling the use of many evaporators of differing capacities and configurations connected to a single condensing unit. The arrangement provides an individualized comfort control, and simultaneous heating and cooling in different zones.
The term VRF refers to the ability of the system to control the amount of refrigerant flowing to each of the evaporators, enabling the use of many evaporators of differing capacities and configurations, individualized comfort control, simultaneous heating and cooling in different zones, and heat recovery from one zone to another. VRF systems operate on the direct expansion (DX) principle meaning that heat is transferred to or from the space directly by circulating refrigerant to evaporators located near or within the conditioned space. Refrigerant flow control is the key to many advantages as well as the major technical challenge of VRF systems.
Installation Advantages. Chillers often require cranes for installation, but VRF systems are lightweight and modu¬lar. Each module can be transported easily and fits into a standard elevator. Multiples of these modules can be used to achieve cooling capacities of hundreds of tons. Each module (or set of two) is an independent refrigerant loop, but they are controlled by a common control system.
Simultaneous Heating and Cooling. Heat recovery and flexible refrigerant flow make it possible to heat and cool different zones on a single refrigerant piping system at any given time. This also helps increase efficiency by capturing what would have been wasted energy from one space and returning it to the other space as useful energy.
Inverter Driven Compressors. Every outdoor unit is equipped with multiple inverter-driven compressors that provide efficiency and comfort.
Reliability. The operating sequence of the individual compressors is rotated, balancing their operating hours and distributing load evenly. Inverters reduce the risk of compressor failure and eliminate on/off power surges.
Flexibility. Smaller equipment footprints matched with longer pipe lengths means there’s a VRF configuration for virtually any commercial or large residential application. VRF systems provide flexibility on reconfiguration of space for future use and can seamlessly adapt to building changes. Changing space can be easily accommodated with the different styles of indoor units without compromising the comfort level.
Comfort. The system adjusts the flow of refrigerant to each indoor unit based on its operating conditions. It computes the amount of refrigerant required by each indoor unit and controls the refrigerant flow to ensure desired comfort level without over cooling or heating of the space.

Is VRF different from VRV?
VRV technology was invented by DAIKIN in 1982 before the VRF models were designed by other competing companies. VRV and VRF adopt the same basic technology used in the manufacturing of the systems.
Types of VRF/VRV System:
Heat Pump
The heat pump is designed to produce only one effect. Cooling or heating. it is not designed to do both function simultaneously.
Heat Recovery
The heat recovery model does both heating and cooling simultaneously. This type of VRF/VRV is best for hotels, multi-homes, restaurants etc.
